Chinese Fried Breadsticks (Youtiao) 🥢🥖✨
Golden, airy, and lightly salted—these breadsticks are a classic Chinese breakfast treat, perfect for dipping in soy milk or pairing with congee.
Ingredients 🛒
- 500 g bread flour
- 3 g salt
- 6 g sugar
- 10 g instant yeast
- 1 egg
- 270 g warm water
- 30 g cooking oil
Method 👩🍳
- Mix dough: In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, sugar, and yeast. Add egg, warm water, and oil. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead: Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover and let rise for 1–2 hours until doubled in size.
- Shape: Punch down dough. Roll into a rectangle about ½ inch thick. Cut into strips (~2 cm wide). Stack two strips together and press lightly in the center with a chopstick.
- Rest: Cover and let shaped dough rest for 15–20 minutes.
- Fry: Heat oil in deep pan to 350°F (175°C). Stretch each strip gently and fry until golden brown, turning once. Drain on paper towels.
- Serve: Enjoy warm with soy milk, congee, or dipping sauces.
Tips
- Texture: Proper resting ensures fluffy inside and crispy outside.
- Oil temp: Keep oil hot but not smoking—too cool and breadsticks absorb oil.
- Serving idea: Slice and stuff with savory fillings like scallions or minced pork.
