Homemade Velveeta (Real Cheese)
Silky, sliceable, and meltable cheese made with real cheddar—perfect for sandwiches, sauces, dips, and grilled cheese.
Ingredients
- 1 cup water
- 1 packet (1/4-ounce) unflavored gelatin
- 1/3 cup dry milk powder
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 4 cups grated mild cheddar cheese or a combination of cheddar and Colby
Directions
Prepare the loaf pan
- Line a small loaf pan with plastic wrap, leaving a few inches of excess on both sides for easy removal. (Smaller loaf-sized containers also work.)
Heat the water
- Pour the water into a saucepan and bring it to a boil.
Blend the dry ingredients
- In a blender, combine the gelatin, dry milk powder, and kosher salt. Pulse a few times to blend.
Add boiling water
- Pour the boiling water into the blender with the dry ingredients and pulse immediately a few times to mix.
Add the cheese
- Quickly add the grated cheddar (or cheddar and Colby) to the blender and process until smooth and creamy.
Transfer to the pan
- Pour or spoon the cheese mixture into the prepared loaf pan. Smooth the top and fold the excess plastic wrap over to cover.
Refrigerate
- Refrigerate for several hours or overnight until firm.
Slice and use
- Remove from the pan using the plastic wrap and slice as needed. Use for snacks, sandwiches, grilled cheese, or in sauces and dips.
Storage
- Wrap: Wrap tightly in plastic wrap.
- Refrigerate: Store in the refrigerator.
- Use within: 3 weeks.
